GP Speaker Series – 2018
Jurong Junior College welcomed Mr Patrick Tay, Chairman of the West Coast Town Council on 5th February 2018 for its very first GP Speaker Series of the year. Not an unfamiliar face to us in the neighbourhood as the MP for West Coast GRC, Mr Tay spoke about Singapore’s economic defence and how we can ensure it in this age of technological advancement. His humorous jokes and greatly thought out presentation engaged our J2 students thoroughly, allowing them to fully understand the important message he had to share.
Through this session, our students were able to grasp fully both the opportunities and threats that the future holds, especially with technological disruption. Mr Tay emphasised that while technological advances bring about many benefits, they also impact us greatly in terms of society and economy. Despite job obsolescence in many domains, one key takeaway was the fact that we may harness the new opportunities in the brand new career market with jobs that do not exist now if we are prepared.
When given the opportunity to raise questions, our students were eager and active. One of the questions concerned the future of arts students and if their career scope had indeed shrunk in the light of technological advancement. Mr Tay responded that no one discipline will be irrelevant, but rather it is the skills with which we are equipped which will help us respond to technological disruption. The students had many insightful questions, all of which was answered fully and astutely by Mr Tay.
Our students enjoyed the session tremendously and would like to thank Mr Patrick Tay for taking time out of his busy schedule to share with us the importance of safeguarding Singapore’s economic defence and what we, as JC students, can do to prepare for the future of the digital age.
