Dear JJcians, parents and alumni,
I extend my warmest wishes and thank you all for your contributions to the JJ fraternity. 2017 was truly a special year for the college as we witnessed the return of over 2000 members of the JJ Family during our JJ Homecoming and the Class of 1982’s Reunion Lunch. The JJ Spirit is well and truly continues to live on in the hearts of all who have in one way or another, been shaped by the college and the values it has espoused over the past 36 years. A new year beckons for the Class of 2018 and with it, opportunities abound for us to create lasting memories of our time in this campus and collectively write this chapter in our proud history.
Many have begun this year pondering about the outcome to the naming of the merging colleges. Given the very difficult decision and the specific factors affecting JC mergers, the merged JCs will adopt a combination of the names of both JCs (in both English and Vernacular), with the name of the older JC coming first to acknowledge history and heritage. As of 11 January 2018, MOE has announced that the name of the merged JC will be Jurong Pioneer Junior College. Retaining both names will provide a common footing for the merged JC to build upon the identities and strengths of both JCs. While there may be some amongst us who would have preferred JJC to continue as status quo, as P-designate of Jurong Pioneer Junior College, I thank you for your understanding and support for the merger.
To the Class of 2018, you are at a significant milestone of our college’s history. As we transit to a new chapter as part of the broader evolution of this college’s history, may you be inspired to give the best account of yourselves and of your JJ experience by committing towards working hard for the A-Level examinations. Just as they have done for your seniors, your teachers will be there with you every step of the way. You are not alone in this journey.
For those of us who have spent many years of our professional careers in JJC, and even our newer staff who appreciate the good work that we do here, the impending merger with Pioneer JC surely strikes a chord with us. Nonetheless, to current staff and teachers of JJC, I have utmost confidence that you will put in your best efforts to support and see this batch of students through their A-Level journey whilst also working committedly towards the merger. As we adapt to what lies ahead, I hope that we as teachers will see the larger changes in the education landscape as a timely and opportune platform for us to reflect on these developments, recalibrate, and commit towards refining our own practices and collectively as a wider teaching fraternity. All of us – from the support staff to teachers – are integral in shaping the future of the next generation of students, wherever we will be posted to in the near future.
To our alumni, your contributions to the college, our society and beyond are hallmarks of the JJ Spirit. Many of you have made your alma mater proud not just through your achievements, but also by answering the call to return and share your varied experiences and advice to the students. I seek your support in providing future batches of students in Jurong Pioneer Junior College the same degree of willingness to impart your pearls of wisdom and real-world knowledge to prepare our young people for life beyond JC. Rest assured that we will work closely with Pioneer JC to preserve the core elements of the JJ ethos as well as our niche education and co-curricular programmes.
“As the road unwinds before us”, let us indeed echo the words of our College Song and “venture on towards the bright tomorrow” with renewed vigour, knowing that our work will not be in vain. Here’s to a great year ahead!
